About the project

The general goal of this 3-year project is to develop new theoretical and methodological approaches of teaching Russian as a Foreign Language (RFL), within an INTERCULTURAL APPROACH (IA) and a revised role of LITERATURE, with Italy as a case study, but also in a perspective of wider application to EU context as a whole.

Despite increasing interest for RFL and promotion of intercultural didactics, gaps in research concern the lack of integration of theory with actual practices at grassroots level, as well as the partial representations of Russian cultural dimension, conveying a fixed, ‘classical’ idea of Russia and neglecting contemporary socio-cultural aspects. That’s why RFL didactics should be rediscussed, paying more attention to learning materials (LMs) and teaching practice (TP) analysis, and applying an updated, critical intercultural perspective.

Specific research objectives are: 

  1. To develop original evaluation tools for RFL LMs;
  2. To analyse Italian RFL LMs;
  3. To compare them with Russian and EU materials;
  4. To gather qualitative and quantitative data on RFL TP through field work in Russia and Italy;
  5. To develop and test a new intercultural-based theoretical and operative model of RFL teaching designed for an EU context (i.e. the main expected results).

The project, grounded in a revised RFL didactics theory informed by IA, will be based on CONTENT ANALYSIS and ACTION RESEARCH methodologies. With its interdisciplinary approach, the project will fill in the gap between language theory and practice, leading to groundbreaking innovation in RFL and wider foreign language teaching, in line with EU Multilingualism policy and EU guidelines.
